As with most of the blocks in this crazy quilt this 8 inch block is worked on crazy patched foundation of synthetic and natural and recycled after 5 fabrics. It includes fabrics found in swatch books of furnishing samples. Many of the fabrics came from swaps with other quilters who enjoy crazy quilting. Braids, Rick Rack, lace and buttons both vintage and contemporary have also been included.
The top left hand corner two rows of Pekinese stitch are worked back to back in hand dyed cotton which is the same weight as DMC pearl 8. The seam was then decorated with beads. Along the top right hand corner is two rows of running stitch interlaced with chenille thread. Beads are nestled in between the gaps and the row is further embellished with detached chain that has a long tail and french knots. Below that is a seam covered with hand dyed lace which has been topped with a row of floral motifs made of stems of straight stitch and flowers of cast on stitch. A bead is sewn in the center of each motif. The bottom row is made of detached chain, straight stitch, bullions and pistil stitch.
Towards the middle of the block is a row of herringbone worked in DMC pearl 8 thread and tied with detached chain stitches worked in DMC Pearl 5 thread. In the right hand corner is a row of rick rack that is secured to the block using zig zag chain and french knots. The button cluster is made up of both vintage and modern buttons.
In the left hand corner a palestrina stitch is used for the stem for the floral design. The flowers are worked in hand dyed cotton thread the same weight as DMC pearl 5. They are made up of an arrangement of detached chain stitches that have a long tail pointing towards the middle of the motif. These were woven in the same manner as you work a woven wheel. The fan like shapes that run across the block are also woven stitches. They are woven in hand dyed cotton the same weight as DMC pearl 5 over 7 straight stitches. A bead is sewn at the base. The design above them uses stem stitch, french knots and detached chain stitches. The butterfly at the base is made up of 2 triple chain stitches worked back to back in DMC pearl 5. The body of the insect is a bullion stitch.
