Crazy quilt 8 inch blocks

crazy quilt block

Stitches used and information about this Crazy quilt block.

As with most of the blocks in this crazy quilt this 8 inch block is worked on crazy patched foundation of synthetic and natural and recycled after 5 fabrics. It includes fabrics found in swatch books of furnishing samples. Many of the fabrics came from swaps with other quilters who enjoy crazy quilting. Vintage lace and braids have also been included.

Top right hand corner is some vintage crochet lace which has been hand dyed. it was sewn to the block and beaded. Along the bottom is a row of detached chain stitches. In the top left hand corner a row of buttonhole worked in DMC pearl 5 thread is above a ribbon couched down with Chevron stitch. Beads were sewn in the gaps. This runs along a large piece of vintage lace, which sits above a seam that is embellished with oyster stitch worked in hand dyed silk that is the same weight as DMC pearl 5 thread. Diagonally across the block is and arrangement of buttonhole which has also been beaded with seed beads.

The floral motif in the middle of the block was created using detached chain worked in silk ribbon arranged like a daisy. Other stitches used in this area are french knots and fern stitch. The motif in the bottom left corner was made using stem stitch and bullion knots that had about 25 wraps in them (if I remember correctly) a bead was sewn in the middle of each to hold them down. The yellow floral design on the right was made using bullion knots worked in rayon ribbon and the foliage was made of half buttonhole wheels, stem stitch, straight stitch and fly stitch stacked on on top of each other.

Above this motif is a seam that runs diagonally across the block which is was covered in cream vintage lace. The edge of the lace is covered with ribbon that is couched down with a version of herringbone that worked with the top section of the row being herringbone and the feet section of the row is worked as chevron stitch. This was tied down with little straight stitches.

Behind the button cluster is a row of arrow stitch which has been threaded with knitting ribbon which I hand dyed. The ribbon in the bottom right hand corner is embellished with straight stitches and seed beads.
