This version of stepped threaded running stitch creates a line which can take on a spiked braid appearance. Work two parallel foundation rows of running stitch. 'Step' the second row. In other words work the second row so that the stitches are set alternately.
A second thread is then laced as illustrated. As you move from from row to row do not pass the needle through the ground fabric. Use a blunt ended tapestry needle for this part of the process to avoid splitting the foundation running stitches.
This stitch makes a good crazy patchwork stitch particularly in combination with other stitches. Interesting effects can be achieved by using a contrasting thread or fine ribbon. Metalic and textured threads look good with this stitch.
