This is an 8 inch block worked on crazy patched foundation of synthetic and natural and recycled fabrics. Many of the fabrics in these blocks come from swaps with other quilters who enjoy crazy quilting.
In the top right hand corner is some hand dyed lace which is topped with detached chain stitches, straight stitch and beading. Below that a motif of couched textured thread covers a seam. In the bottom right corner is an arrangement of buttonhole worked in silk thread. Fly stitch is tucked in between the buttonhole spines and a bugle bead interspersed with dome like sequins was sewn down to complete the seam.
The top left hand corner has a crochet motif that has a vintage button sewn in the centre. Below this is a seam covered in rick rack. Over the top of this I used zig zag chain and from the edges straight stitches, detached chain and seed beads splay outwards.
Running diagonally across the block is a version of threaded running stitch which was worked with three rows of running stitch on each side in rayon thread then threaded with a fine cord that I hand dyed. Oyster stitch runs along the wide braid in the middle and above that a row of half buttonhole wheels worked in DMC pearl 5 are topped with a detached chain worked with a long tail and straight stitches worked in a slightly lighter weight cotton thread.
In the left corner area is the traditional spider for good luck in a spider web worked in metallic thread. The web was worked using coral stitch. Below this are is a seam which has been embellished with loops of seed beads. The buttons in the right hand bottom corner are both vintage and modern.
