Fern Stitch is easily worked as it is simply an arrangement of three straight stitches of equal length, that radiate from a central point.

Work the central spine first then stitch a straight stitch either side of that spine.

It is a stitch that can be tucked in and around other stitches that represent flowers such as those worked in silk ribbon embroidery or in Brazilian embroidery.

The branched line it produces topped off with french knots or seed beads can pull a floral spray together well.

Being a quick versatile stitch it is ideal to wind its way over a seam on a crazy patchwork block or as part of a crazy quilt motif. This makes it a good stitch to add to your needlework favourites.
